Speaker Bios:
Practicing hospice and palliative medicine physician, author, and speaker Dr. BJ Miller, MD is the founder of Mettle Health. The company aims to provide personalized, holistic consultations for patients and caregivers who need help navigating the practical, emotional, and existential issues that come with serious illness and disability. Inspired by his own experiences as a patient, BJ advocates for the roles of our senses, community, and presence while designing a better ending. He has given over 100 talks both nationally and internationally on the topics of death, dying, palliative care, and the intersection of healthcare with design.
After training in Europe, America, and the Caribbean, American Board-Certified internal medicine physician and hospice and palliative medicine specialist Dr. Chelsea Garcia, MD applied the lessons she learned internationally to her own creation: a medical model adapted to her home islands of Trinidad and Tobago. Dr. Garcia’s innovative delivery model of care sees the patient and not the disease. The model aims to optimize quality of life and therefore set the stage to make Trinidad and Tobago a world leader in Palliative Medicine. Following her longtime passions, Dr. Garcia founded a medical company that accords with her model of care: LivHealth. Dr. Garcia is the author of Becoming Me: a workbook written to enhance multidisciplinary patient support and overcome medical time constraints. It has been tried and tested with over 150 patients and was created by patients for patients.
Dr. Michael D. Fratkin, MD, FAAHPM is dedicated to the well-being of his community. He has served in primary care at a community clinic system, as a medical director of a local hospice, as a leader in the community hospital’s medical staff, and as a transformative voice advocating for improvement of the end of life experience. At a time of great demographic and cultural change in our society, Dr. Fratkin has created ResolutionCare to ensure capable and soulful care of patients as they approach the end of life.
Dr. Katy Lanz, DNP, ACHPN, FPCN currently serves PCMA (a growing geriatric and palliative medical practice) as Chief Strategy Officer. She was Chief Clinical Officer for Aspire Health and grew it from a start-up company to a multi-hundred million acquisition as the largest palliative practice in the country. Since then, she founded TopSight Partners, an advisory firm for providers, payers, and investors. Katy applies her two decades of clinical and operational successes (including 10 years spent at the bedside of the seriously ill) to her role as an advisor to growing companies and to her position on the board of the National Hospice & Palliative Care Organization.
